Vegan sandwich spread

The carbon footprint of cheese shocked me. So, I've looked for vegan sandwich spreads. Delicious! Would you like to eat more plant based food too? Save the date for the next fireside chat on how it makes you happier, healthier and wealthier: Thursday January 27th, 7 pm CET

2900 year old olive tree

Wow, apparently this tree is 2,900 years old! As is mentioned in the tweet, this tree survived the writing of the Iliad, the golden age of Athens, the rise of the Roman Empire and the birth of Christ, and lives 2,000 years after that. Imagine that! Nature is amazing! Loading... Twitter Embed Code

#234 - Reducing white spacing and font size before printing to reduce paper

Image
I got a ticket for an event a while ago, which I had to print now. I noticed that printing it as it was, would require two sheets. I decided to reduce the font size and white spacing, so that I only needed one sheet.

Tap water 200x cheaper than bottled water

Image
When you can choose between two similar products, but one is 200 times more expensive, which one would you choose? I would choose the cheaper one. That's why I'm drinking tap water - which is where I live clean - instead of bottled water.

Respecting people who already take action for our planet

I often read people wondering when we finally take action towards a healthier planet. I'd prefer to see messages that respect people who already take action. There are many, for example Jedidah and friends. Thank you for your very important contribution! #sustainableLiving Loading... Twitter Embed Code Retweet text: Mass tree 🌲🌲🌲 planting.

#599 - Drying wet pages from magazine to be able to read them after all

Image
Oops, I forgot my magazine outside, so that it got drenched by the rain. As I know that pages stick together when they get dry, I ripped off the pages I hadn't read yet and dried them. This way, I was able to read the whole magazine and no words were wasted.

Autumn train journey through Germany

Wanna go for a ride? Then I take you on a short train journey in autumn through Germany. It reminds me of a ride through an adventure park. Relaxing and fun! And I'm writing this on the train, so it allows me to be productive as well!

Where I live, glass is collected separately (#96). But there are different bins, depending on the color of the glass. So I make sure I put the correct color in the correct bin.

#598 - Returning card I found to owner instead of throwing it away

Image
I found this card on a walk. It is a card from an electric car owner. As I appreciate him/her driving an e-car, I decided to return the card to the owner, instead of throwing it away (or worse, leaving it in nature).

Some problems solve themselves

Image
"Some problems solve themselves" I keep this in mind when I can't find what I'm looking for. Like this pencil: instead of spending ages looking for it earlier this week, I thought this quote and tata ... when I moved this chair today, I heard it falling on the ground!

A day without laughter is a day wasted

This amazing, singing bird reminds me of the Dutch saying: "een dag niet gelachen is een dag niet geleefd" or in English: "A day without laughter is a day wasted". #232 - Printing two instead of one slide on a page

Image
When I do print something occasionally, I try to print two slides/pages on one page. Compared to one-sided printing with one slide/page, I only require a quarter of the amount of paper;  compared to double-sided printing with one slide/page, I only require half the amount of paper.

#597 - Making as many corners as possible in the city green

Image
I recently saw a documentary about a German city, which is too hot. That's because a lot of areas are completely paved. They are now changing all kinds of things to have more green areas in the city. Of course, it is better to plan such corners in advantage. And it looks good too!
Image
Last week I asked what do you think is the definition of healthy by World Health Organization (WHO). - 57% answered complete well-being - 30% answered absence of illness - 13% answered good physical condition The correct answer is indeed complete well-being: "Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity" (WHO) I agree and they are interconnected: e.g. a healthy body fosters a healthy mind. Human fingerprint and tree rings: We are all connected

It's amazing to see the similarity! The growth rings of a tree are color differences. These are caused by different sizes of vessels, which are built during growth. #596 - Using brown instead of colored wrapping paper

Tree to climb on

This tree! I walked past it recently and reminded me of my childhood. I used to climb on it and loved it. And this good old friend is still there in good shape! The more I look at trees, the more reasons I see why they are valuable to us.

Redoing videos instead of calling camera names

This week, I recorded videos and was pleased with the result. Until I saw them on my computer: they were all flickering. I tried to get rid of it, but in vain. Annoying, but as being frustrated and calling my camera names wouldn't help, I focused on redoing them instead.

#595 - Switching off coffee machine when coffee is finished

Image
Coffee machines with water in it, keep the water warm for the next cup. But when it takes a long time between cups, it takes a lot of energy to keep the water heated. In that case, it is better to switch off the machine and heat up the water again when needed.

A green oasis

An old man told me this: the previous mayor of his town planted a forest. These days, many people enjoy this green oasis and praise him for his efforts. I enjoyed walking there too! Another good reason to stop deforestation and start planting trees!

Reaping the fruits of life

People often say "I want to grow old". I then wonder whether it's really about reaching an old age. #228 - Accelerating slowly when driving off

Image
When I occasionally drive a car, I make sure that I have as many good driving habits as possible. I already am - opening window instead of using air conditioning (#51),  - reducing speed on motorway (#158),  - driving at constant speed (#191)  - switching off engine at standstill (#192),  - increasing air pressure to reduce friction (#205) and  - driving a smaller car (#223). In addition, it is possible to accelerate slowly, for example after having waited for a red sign. It saves fuel but also puts less pressure on the car, so that it lasts longer.

Using alpaca wool or not?

Image
Hmm, what to do in this case? Being vegan means not using or eating any animal products out of respect for the animals. But I learned that alpacas die when humans don't shave off their wool. And when shaving it off, we might as well use it. What do you think?

#593 - Creating place to hide for small animals in urban area

Image
In an urban area, with a lot of pavements and streets, it an be a challenge for small animals to hide.  That's why I appreciate this neighbor, who dug in half a flower pot as a place to hide.

Resourcefulness or resources?

Image
In Germany, many people have a job as they feel that's safe, but the pandemic showed it's not. That's why I value resourcefulness: having the right knowledge and skills allow me to find a way even with limited resources (e.g. money) And, I get to keep it!

Spreading goodness and love for a correct impression

#226 - Paying bill immediately to prevent getting reminder

Do you like competitions? If yes, I bet you like this idea by Jürgen Bremer ( https://juergen-bremer.de ): he told me that he's competing with his daughter to show who can use the least amount of petrol when driving a car. Brilliant! Would you win?

Slow motion in fast paced world

#591 - Using olive oil instead of medicine to soak excess earwax

A while ago, my ear got blocked. The doctor said that I can use olive oil to soften the earwax. I was grateful to learn this, as I prefer this over buying a medicine that I use once and has gone off when I need it again!

Relax, and travel fast ... by train

#225 - Using search engine that uses profits to plant trees

Image
I have found a search engine that claims to use their profit to plant trees. That is great as I am using a search engine often. I’ve made it my standard search engine immediately.

Paying even when not using it

Paying but not using it. Sounds odd, but more common than you think: I guess you also have clothes you never wear? And less obvious, this happens with cars too: When you don't use your car, you still pay insurance. That's why I love carsharing: I only pay when I use one.

Being on the road, a mouse without cable is quite practical, but when in the office, a mouse with cable works just as well.
