Free range eggs

Image
Where I live, supermarkets offer battery cage and free range eggs. I chose free range eggs, assuming these chickens have a good life. So, I was shocked to learn that there is hardly any difference, as the outside area is small and unpleasant. In future, I will chose neither.

Long weekend off

Autumn is here and I will enjoy this beautiful time with a long weekend off with my partner. I'll continue sharing posts, but will reduce the time on my computer as much as possible. #569 - Going through old documents before throwing them away, to see which pages are printed single-sided

Image
During a recent cleanup, I found slide from the degree that I finished in 2007. As they are so old, I don't need them anymore. Instead of throwing them away, I went through the pile to see which sheets are printed single-sided so that I can use these as scrap paper.

Panelist at UN event about sustainable Digital transformation in the Arab Region

Image
As panelist at today's UN event  "Sustainable Digital transformation in the Arab Region - Challenges and Opportunities" (@ITU), I didn't get immediate feedback as cameras were off.  But here you can see that it went very well (start 00:58:22): https://itu.zoom.us/rec/play/J33QGRk7CanIJABdPYFKcXyyFa2spQ2aRii9XDsLw4yhuIpZTl4vl5BlF16mB91Yq2us9RU6gxTt8Kzd.xIcntZvH7S0lSMGK?autoplay=true&startTime=1632898601000

#203 - Taking as little stuff in car as possible

Image
The car I recently borrowed from my parents had some stuff in the boot. I realised that everything I carry unnecessarily requires me to use more petrol to move forward. So the next opportunity, I got rid of everything possible from my borrowed car.

Measuring ancient CO2 levels

Image
How can ancient CO 2 levels be measured? E.g. from certain shells at the sea bottom. These shells contain different types of boron. The boron composition depended on the water acidity, the acidity on the amount of dissolved CO 2  in the water and dissolved CO 2  on CO 2 in the air. #568 - Using partner's old t-shirt as pajama instead of buying new one

Image
As my partner is taller than me, I fit into his t-shirts. I occasionally wear them in case of an "emergency". That's why I found out that they are quite comfortable. So, I was very happy when I could adopt this one as my pajama.

Cross-species affection

Something else I love about biodiversity is that it allows cross-species affection like you can see here. I still sometimes dream about the guinea pigs I used to have as a kid, and I guess you also wouldn't want to miss your dog, cat, horse, etc. #KindnessMatters Loading... Bee hotel as house number

Image
This is made with so much love! Look at this gorgeous hotel for bees in which some already found their home! And the great thing: it's of practical use for the owner too: the holes are drilled so that they form the house number. You can get yours #ad https://www.etsy.com/nl/listing/922846446/bij-gebouw

#202 - Defrosting bread on heating instead of toaster

Image
When visiting my parents' house, I got some bread from the freezer for breakfast.  As I was hungry and didn’t want to wait for too long, I decided to defrost the bread.  Instead of using the toaster, I put the bread on the heating that was turned on anyway.  This saved some energy.

Leaving leaves on the ground

Apart from that it is more environmentally friendly to leave leaves on the ground, look how beautiful it is! And this is a good reminder as autumn is coming where I live, so no need to spend time on tidying up. #sustainableLiving #forNature Loading... #567 - Putting tape on crack in hair brush so that it doesn't break

Image
I've been using this brush for years and would like to keep on using it as long as possible. So, when I during brushing heard it crack and noticed that the crack started to go bigger slowly, I decided to put tape on it. Since then, it has stayed the same, so I'm very happy to be able to use it for a lot longer.

Endorphin boost when running

Image
Once a week, I go for a run with other people. I sometimes drag myself to it, but as soon as I'm running, I'm always glad I went. That's because e.g. running gives me an endorphin boost, a hormone that makes us happy. What sports do you do to get this boost and feel good?

Using old newspapers to craft decorative flowers

#201 - Taking foot from accelerator pedal instead of braking

Image
When I occasionally drive a car, I make sure that I only break when it is really necessary.  This means that when I in the distance see a red light or a traffic jam, I take my foot off the accelerator pedal.  I will continue rolling for a while.  By the time I get to the last car, the light has often turned green or the last car has moved forward, so that I didn’t have to break and can continue driving.

Energy usage of servers

This message just arrived via the internet, implying that e.g. your phone is communicating with other computers called servers. As these servers live in data centers and not my home, I often don't realize their energy usage. Did you when you were last streaming a video?

How a human and chicken make each other happy

#566 - Using empty coffee container as cutlery holder

Image
This is my partner's idea: he used this old coffee container to put cutlery in. Clever idea as this way we don't have to buy container and reduce waste.

Getting honey out

Image
This honey is hard to get out. And being lazy, I haven't eaten it for a while. But when I learned that a bee flies twice around the earth for 500 g / 1 pound of honey, I realized that getting the honey out is no effort compared to that! Now enjoying this honey more than ever!

We value more what we create ourselves

Once I read about a scientific experiment in which participants folded origami pelicans. Because they put effort in folding, they were willing to pay more to take them home, even when objectively the result wasn't great. So, I guess that self-harvested food tastes better too! Loading... I now finally have a good reason to lick off my plate: I don’t want to waste any food.

And what about the fish?

And what about the fish? Two days ago, I shared a picture of a hydroelectric power plant. What I love is that they also thought about the fish. They can pass through this stream next to the dam.

#565 - Putting empty tea bag wrapping below plate to prevent it from blowing away

Digitalization: curse or blessing?

Image
Digitalization: curse or blessing? Computers use a lot of energy these days, however, current technology can also be used to reduce energy usage when opportunities and challenges are addressed. As a panelist at this UN (@UNECE) meeting, I contributed to this discussion today.

Being careful with definite statements

I often hear or read statements such as "no one cares anymore". But such definitive statements are seldom true. Because look, I care a lot and this man obviously does too. That's why I'm very careful using words like always, never, everyone and no one. Loading... #199 - Pouring cooled water from hot water bottle in bucket (#10)

Image
When it is cold and I have very short showers (#9) or wash at the tap (#129), I need a hot water bottle to warm up.  Otherwise it takes ages to fall asleep.  So I use a hot water bottle. In the morning, the water is cold.  As I already watered my plants with that water yesterday, I can’t water them again.  So I poured the water into the bucket that is in my shower (#10) so that I can use it for other things, such as flushing the toilet.

Hydroelectric power plant

Image
A dead end. But not really, as I found this beautiful building. It's a hydroelectric power plant built in 1903. It saves 7000 tons of CO2 a year, so 826,000 tons since it's been built. That's equivalent to 1 plane in the air non-stop for about 1000 years!

#564 - Leaving part of lawn untouched so that flowers can grow

Image
I came across this lawn and noticed one part with a sign. The sign said that this part was on purpose left as is, so that flowers can grow and insects have a place to go. And there was even a phone number in case I had any questions.

Sponsoring my project

Image
Do you wonder who sponsors my sustainability project? It's me: I'm also doing projects in other fields to earn a living. For example, I tested the security of a website this week. It's not always easy to have this double workload, but giving up my project is not an option.

#198 - Eating not only fresh but also dried basil leaves

Image
I have a basil plant in my kitchen to grow the leaves for my pizza.  This means I do not have to buy new leaves in – mostly plastic – wrappings in the shop.  Last time, I got rid of the dried leaves from this plant.  Afterwards I wondered why I did that, as these leaves are usually the ones you buy in the shop. So this time, I ate both the fresh and the dried ones.

#563 - Building a LEED certified building

#197 - Using washable toilet paper for weeing

Image
Yesterday I prepared for today’s experiment: using washable toilet paper.  And even though it sounds a bit weird, I have to say that it works really well.  And thinking about it, the idea isn’t really that strange, as there are also pantyliners (#106) and nappies that can be washed.  I do have to say that I only use it for weeing.  The big job is a bridge too far.

#562 - Using edible decoration

Image
I saw this decoration in a restaurant. What a great idea to use edible decoration, as it has two purposes at the same time. And compared to cut flowers, this plant lasts a lot longer.

#196 - Cutting old t-shirts in stripes to use as toilet paper

Image
I have a few t-shirts that I don’t want to wear anymore, but I also don’t want to throw them away. I decided to cut two in stripes to use them as toilet paper. My reasoning: when I use washable pantyliners (#106), I might as well use washable toilet paper.

Squirrel planting nuts

Like burying nuts, I often do things in the context of my sustainability work that I feel are the right thing to do. Soon afterwards, I can't remember that I did it. And then sometime a tree springs and I have no idea where it comes from. Probably from one of these nuts. Loading... #561 - Buying bread in bakery that sells bread from the day before

Image
Where I live is a special bakery.  It's name is "Pastries from the day before" but often called "Day before bakery".  They sell bread that would otherwise be thrown away, for example because it's from the day before or it doesn't look good enough. A great way to reduce food waste!

Electronic waste

Image
An old computer, an old phone. Electronic waste is very common these days. Recycling them properly is worth it, as they contain valuable metals e.g. gold, which can be reused. Did you know that an iPhone contains 0,034g / 0.001 ounce of gold? That's about €1,50 / $1.80.

#195 - Choosing smallest box possible when sending item

Image
When sending something by snail mail, I tend to choose the smallest possible box.  First, it saves packaging and I don’t have to fill the box with any material (see #132).  Also, by having a small box, more boxes fit into a delivery car, meaning that they have to travel less distance in total.

#560 - Using hairpins to keep hair in place instead of hair spray

Image
For my freelance university teaching job, we filmed videos. In front of a green screen, it was important that my hair on the side wasn't sticking out.  Instead of using hair spray, I used these pins. Worked perfectly well and way more environmentally friendly.
