Why Cybersecurity is Key to a Sustainable World, Safeguarding Life and Planet

⚠️  If you think sustainability and cybersecurity—my fields of expertise—are completely unrelated, you're not alone. But they do intersect in ways that can make the difference between life and death:

🌞 Imagine a vast solar farm stretching across the desert, designed to power thousands of homes with clean energy. One day, it’s hacked, leaving communities scared and without power for days. Shortly after, far away, a smart irrigation system built to save water during a drought malfunctions after a cyberattack, flooding fields, wasting precious resources, and making people panic.

🎬 These aren’t scenes from a sci-fi movie—they are real threats in a world where digital systems support sustainability. So, we need people at the intersection of technology and environmentalism to protect the progress we are making. Like me!

🌍 As a science communicator with a deep passion for sustainability, I make complex environmental issues simple, engaging, and inspiring for everyone to make the physical world a safer place. At the same time, I’m an ethical hacker and cybersecurity teacher, making the digital world a safer place.

🌱 For me, caring for our planet isn’t just about promoting clean energy or energy efficiency. It involves solving all three current crises (climate change, environmental pollution, and biodiversity loss) while ensuring that the digital backbone, the information, and the initiatives that drive our green revolution are secure.

🚨 That’s why I’m determined to raise awareness of this important topic! For example, I was first author for a United Nations article in which we discussed important aspects and solutions to ensure digital safety in our current electricity grid (view the article here: https://unece.org/sites/default/files/2023-08/ECE_ENERGY_GE.6_2023_3_ECE_ENERGY_GE.5_2023_3_EN_0.pdf).

🔓 I also for example demonstrate in jawdropping livehack presentations how we can be hacked and manipulated. Including Internet of Things (IoT) devices, which are the small devices that make smart cities and energy-efficient systems possible. (Please reach out if you would like to know more about these presentations for your event.)

💡 So, when you also care about your future and our planet, take cybersecurity seriously. Learn what you can do in, for example, my livehack presentations and seek help whenever needed. This way, we can transform lives and build resilient communities, and we can create a future that is not only greener but also safer. Thank you!
