Hundreds of kilometers of roots

This is mind-blowing:

When we are asked to draw a tree, we tend to draw the trunk and leaves,

missing out 30% of the tree:

the roots.

And yet, trees can have hundreds of kilometers of roots!

Imagine that! 

My head can't get round it yet.
