Food waste or decoration for Halloween?

46 days into my 365 Clover Challenge: 

When I cycled past all these pumpkins, I assumed they are meant for cooking. But then I saw a video about ten thousands of pumpkins being harvested for #Halloween. I was shocked that so much food isn't eaten and merely used for decoration.
